Are the split rings on salmo hornets and butchers of a reliable standard? What alternatives would you recommend?

On the light rods that these lures are used with you can exert very little force on them in landing a fish, but problems can be caused in the net when a fish has its whole weight plus the force of any head-shaking pulling against the mesh of the net.

I've never noticed a problem with them though.

I've changed a few Hornet hooks (to Gam B13s) as well and again I can't remember any difficulties.

I have hooked some relatively large things  with Hornets and never had one of the factory fitted splits fail. However, I always take off the split ring on the attachment eye of my Hornets. My rationale for this is that being wired-through if a split ring was to go I would rather it results in me leaving a treble in a snag and getting the lure back than loosing the whole lure. The Hornet buzzes so well I don't notice any loss of action following the removal of this split.

Hopefully Salmo will maintain their build quality and not go the way of some other brands

I'm with Neil re removing the attachment eye split ring on the Hornet (or any other lure) for exactly the reason he states.

They do buzz well, you notice straight away if the tiniest bit of weed fouls them.
